Cultural Heritage

Born and raised in the rural Gullah Geechee community of Huger, South Carolina, Dr. Jessica Berry is proudly Gullah Geechee. Her deep connection to the culture was reignited in graduate school, where a research project on teachers’ perceptions of different dialects uncovered the harmful stigmas often placed on Gullah Geechee language and identity. This pivotal moment transformed her academic journey into a personal mission, fueling a lifelong passion to educate, advocate, and elevate the voices of Gullah Geechee people. Today, Dr. Berry weaves her cultural heritage into every aspect of her scholarship and leadership, championing inclusivity, cultural pride, and intergenerational empowerment.
